CHAPTER ELEVEN

The next day, Dexter gripped his son in a bear hug good-bye. He had more mixed emotions about his two-day stay this time. The nagging question always returned: would Alex stay out of his way?

“I love you, Pop.”

“Me too. Take care of Shana and Jillian. I’ll see you soon,” Dexter said as he walked out of Trent’s condo to his rental car to return to the airport. Trent was on his way to pick up Shana and Jillian and escort them to church. Briefly, he wondered if Alex was also attending.

Dexter was a man who was always sure of himself, so he wondered why he felt threatened by Alex. Plain and simple, the man was in the way. He learned from his interrogation of Alex that he had rebounded from his past mistakes and was doing quite well for himself. Dexter forgot the name of the business he pioneered and helped flourish.

Once he had checked in at the airport, cleared security, and not long after that settled in his window seat, Dexter wondered what attracted Jillian to a man besides butterflies. He chuckled, recalling the look of pleasure when they practically kissed her face when she opened the door. He had momentarily become invisible.

Three weeks. That’s how long Dexter would have to wait until he could return to St. Louis. Still, he refused to let five hundred miles keep him from wooing Jillian.

Later that night, alone in his spacious home, he phoned her. She chatted mostly about Sunday’s sermon, but he patiently suffered through it just to hear her voice. Finally, seemingly out of wind, Jillian opened the floor to Dexter.

“Jay, when was the last time you were out on a date—I mean pampered from the front door to dinner, play, whatever and back to your doorstep?”

The line was silent until Dexter thought she might not answer. “I was a teenage mother, and when Shana became a teenager, I kept a close eye on her. A social life wasn’t an option... I did go out with a few brothers from my church, but let’s face it, why get involved with a woman with a baby when there are plenty of childless ladies to choose from?”

“I know a beautiful woman such as yourself wasn’t completely homebound, so how long has it been since you had a date?” Dexter smirked. “And no long explanation. This is a numbers question.”

“Okay, six months ago. Are you satisfied?”

“Very.”

Eying the time, Dexter knew he should get ready for work the next day. At the moment, he wished they were silly teenagers who would fall asleep on the phone while waiting for the other to disconnect.

“I know you like spinach. How about we set up a Skype later in the week and we can prepare a dish together.”

Jillian chuckled and then took her time answering, “Different, but it sounds like fun.”

He smiled at the excitement in her voice. “I’ll call you tomorrow or the next day with a recipe and the ingredients you’ll need.”

“I can’t wait.”

He couldn’t either as he imagined her eyes bright with anticipation.
